SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

Three optional excursions will be available for ITM participants, at 29th September (Wednesday) afternoon. The choice will be done during conference registration.

1. Boat tour over Ria de Aveiro

A tourist boat will drive you in a trip over Ria de Aveiro, where the famous colourful and attractive boats (“moliceiros”) carried in the past lots of weight through the shallow canals. This typical estuarine lagoon extends parallel to the sea with a length of 45 km and a width of 11 km. This trip will guide the participant into the lagoon area and show the unique communication with the open sea: a man made canal (XIX century) cutting through the land-strip between Barra and S. Jacinto. You will stop at São Jacinto, an ex-libris of the region, which holds a magnificent biodiversity of Atlantic flora and offers a remarkable landscape of sea and “ria”.

2. Tour over Ílhavo: Maritime Museum, a codfish boat and the Costa Nova beach

This tour intends to take you back to the old typical cod-fishing (practised by the fishermen from Ílhavo since the 16^th century in the north-western Atlantic icy seas), starting with the visit of the Maritime Museum of Ílhavo, and of the old trawler codfish boat “Santo André”. The tour finishes at the emblematic “Costa Nova” houses with its colourful striped fronts, placed between the sea and the “ria”.

3. Tour over Aveiro: The “Ovos Moles”, a Moliceiro boat trip and the “Beira-Mar” quarter.

This tour intends to take you over the most typical features of the city of Aveiro. It starts with a visit to the well-known factory of the famous sweet eggs called “Ovos Moles”, followed by a boat trip through the shallow canals on the colourful and typical “moliceiros” boats. The participants will also have the opportunity to take a walk into the historical “Beira-Mar” fishermen quarter.
